Handmade Afghan Belgiek Rug

This Belgiek runs the same classic diagonal gul repeat as its counterparts, but the border here does something different, an unusually wide, near-black burgundy frame surrounds the crimson field, so dark it almost reads as a separate, deeper layer of the rug rather than a simple edge. Inside that heavy border, the field itself carries row after row of cross-shaped guls in navy and dark red, tightly interlocked in a diagonal grid with fine geometric infill. The contrast between the brighter red field and the near-black border gives this piece real depth and shadow, more dramatic than the more evenly toned Belgiek pieces in this collection.
