Handmade Afghan Berjasta Rug

This Berjasta takes the banded flatweave tradition and runs it to its fullest expression, dozens of narrow horizontal stripes stacked from top to bottom, each one done in a different technique and color rather than a single repeating motif. Chevron zigzags in sage and grey sit next to fine diamond lattices in burgundy and ivory, which sit next to tight checkerboards in red or navy, which sit next to plain solid bands in pink, gold, or blue-grey. No two neighboring stripes repeat the same pattern or color, so the whole rug reads like a woven sampler, dozens of small textile studies laid end to end rather than one unified design.
