Handmade Afghan Suzani Rug

This one borrows its layout from Central Asian Suzani embroidery rather than the knotted-carpet tradition, and it shows in how the pattern behaves. A soft grey field is filled edge to edge with round, sunburst-style floral medallions, each one built from layered petals in brick red, mustard gold, cream, and teal, spaced in a diagonal diamond lattice with fine scrolling vines connecting them. A matching grey border, scaled up with larger versions of the same rosette medallions, frames the whole piece and echoes the same motif at a bigger size.

Translating an embroidered Suzani pattern into a knotted pile rug is trickier than it looks, since the layered petal shading that gives Suzani work its dimensional look has to be built entirely through knot placement rather than stitched thread. Every rosette and connecting vine in this rug was hand-knotted through Kelim Shop's own production based in Afghanistan, with our weavers keeping the color layering within each medallion clean and well defined.

The grey ground keeps the piece grounded despite how much color sits inside each medallion, letting the rosettes read as bright, individual focal points rather than blurring into a single busy field.
