Handmade Afghan Komak Modern Rug

There isn't really a way to describe this one as a "pattern," because it isn't one. The Komak Modern reads more like a page of studies than a repeating carpet design, a scatter of unrelated shapes, hearts in cream, green, blue, and navy, a tall teal peak, a set of nested squares closing in on a red diamond, an empty grey octagon, a chevron patch, all laid out across a muted charcoal-grey field with thin white outlines around every shape, like a diagram someone sketched by hand and never quite finished. Nothing lines up with anything else, and that's clearly intentional.

This kind of composition only works because of how it's actually built. The base field carries the fine, irregular striping typical of a Gabbeh weave, while each shape sits on top like its own small rug within the rug, given its own color and texture. Every outline and shape in this piece was hand-knotted through Kelim Shop's own production based in Afghanistan, with our weavers keeping each isolated motif crisp against the softer, textured ground around it.

Because nothing repeats and no two shapes match, this rug behaves more like a piece of art than a traditional floor covering, it's the kind of thing that gives a room a genuine talking point rather than blending into the background.
