Handmade Afghan Vintage Farhan Rug

This Farhan piece takes the opposite approach from a dense all-over rug, giving the design room to breathe. A warm camel field is left largely open, with a single large scrolling medallion outlined in fine denim blue at the center and matching quarter-medallions echoing the same vine and palmette scrollwork in each corner. A slim blue guard border with small rosettes and pendant motifs frames the whole piece. The effect is closer to line drawing than dense pattern work, which is exactly where its character comes from.

Rugs built this open are actually harder to get right than a busy one, since every gap between the linework has to stay clean and even for the design to read properly. Every scroll and rosette in this piece was hand-knotted through Kelim Shop's own production in North Afghanistan, with our weavers keeping the outline work fine and consistent against the open camel ground.
