Handmade Afghan Vintage Khal Rug

This Khal comes out of the workshops of North Afghanistan, where the design tradition draws on older Central Asian trellis patterns rather than the more familiar Persian florals. The ivory field is filled edge to edge with a tight lattice of octagon and diamond medallions in taupe and warm grey, each one packed with fine geometric infill, so the pattern reads as intricate and layered even at a distance. A cloud-band style border in matching tones frames the whole piece.

Weaving a lattice this dense and this consistent is slow, precise work. Every medallion and connecting line in this rug was hand-knotted through Kelim Shop's own production, with our weavers based in North Afghanistan following the traditional Khal repeat by hand.

Because the palette stays so tightly tonal, ivory, beige, taupe, with only a touch of gold in the medallion centers, the rug reads as calm and refined rather than busy, letting the intricacy of the pattern carry the piece instead of color.
